Secretariat of the Environment presents pilot scheme to use CNG in Mexico

August 5, 2013. Juan Jose Guerra Abud, Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources of Mexico, announced a pilot program with heavy and light vehicles industry and Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex), to define the use of natural gas in the units and thereby reduce contamination.

The federal official recalled that were discovered significant volumes of natural gas in northern Mexico and built pipelines to be available across the country. The intention is to move forward with a pilot project in a locality, which could be in the Gulf or north of the country, but will be decided later based on a technical analysis.

On the other hand, he said it is already constituted the Metropolitan Environmental Commission, composed of the Federal District, Mexico State and the Secretariat of Environment. The aim is to standardize verification systems, strategies to reduce emissions at an early stage, and then extrapolate to other environmental issues, because it can help improve conditions throughout the region. Tthe commission would be headed by specialists, and shall have a Governing Board composed of state councils and the Secretariat, as the region comprises more than 30 million inhabitants.
